Micah 6:8 Introduction (© Jeff McNair)
"He has shown you, O man, what is good and what God wants you to do. But to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God."
We begin this lesson by doing an inductive study of Micah 6:8. In an inductive study you look at the verse and just draw conclusions from what it tells you. I will list the parts of the verse in bold text and the observations in italics. I walk through this verse like this in front of the class. After a while, some of the folks will begin to get it and make observations whether or not they can read. You can prompt them with questions that will help with the observations. I will give an example of a question after each of the sections where we are making observations in green.
He has (Who is the Bible all about or who is "He" talking about?...about God )
-It has already been done
-God has
shown you (How does someone show you how to do something?...can use words, or demonstrate. How would you show somebody how to use the television?)
-with words
-and in a way that we can understand
O man (When the Bible says man, it means people, men and women)
-all of you people
what is good (How do we know what is good or not good?...the Bible tells us, because we might not always know)
-some things are good
-some things are not good
-He has in interest in good things
and
-what he is going to say next has to do with what is good
what (does)
-asks a question about what is good...going to tell you what part what is good that He...
the Lord
-who He is
wants you to do (Does God want us to do things and not do other things?)
-the Lord expects you to do something that has to do with what is good that he already told you about
-you are supposed to do something
-the Lord can expect you to do something
-the "you" is all people (O man)
but to (What do many Christians and as a result many other people think that God usually wants Christians to do, or more like not do do?)
-you only have to...but means something you probably didn't expect, something different
do justly (talk a little about what justice means...to do what is right like not stealing, treating people right, etc.)
-"do" is an important word
-we do justice
-doing justice is something people can do
-justice is something important that God wants us to do
-justice has to do with things we do
-justice is something we have been told to do
-justice is good ("what is good" above)
In a future lesson we will talk about how you can do justice.
and to love mercy (talk a little about what mercy is...getting something that you don't deserve...showing kindness...for example, I loose your 5$ bill. I should have to pay it back but you say I don't have to. That is showing mercy.)
-we are to love mercy
-we may not have the ability to do mercy but we should love it (may have to do with having power to do something)
-we may not now that we are to love mercy so we are told to love it
-mercy is good ("what is good" above)
In a future lesson we will talk about how to love mercy.
and to walk (Why does it say walk and not run or sit?...here it means moving forward with God, growing as a Christian, communicating, its hard to communicate if you are running, and you don't get anywhere if you are sitting)
-we should be walking
-if we are not walking we should start
-we aren't sitting or running, we are walking
(walk) humbly (talk a little bit about what humble means...not being proud, or braggy, or thinking you are better than everyone else.)
-people are not walking
-walking humbly is good ("what is good" above
-walking humbly is required
-there are different ways to walk and one of them is to walk humbly
-we could walk not humbly
-I am told to walk humbly so walking humbly is something I can do
In a future lesson we will talk about how to walk humbly.
with your God (I wonder what it means to walk with God...does anyone have any ideas? You will talk about this more later)
-God wants us to walk with Him
-He is our God
-we can walk with God
In a future lesson we will talk about how I can walk with God.
